Is double dipping worth the fees?

One $10,000 invoice. Two sets of points. A supplier invoice paid by Amex through pay.com.au, with PayRewards Plus switched on. Your card earns on it, PayRewards earns on it, and both turn into airline points.

The fees: $394 (ex GST), about $296 after tax. The points are worth an indicative $744, about 2.5 times that. Paid straight from your bank to the supplier, the same invoice earns nothing.

About this example

Example: Amex Platinum Business at 2.25 Membership Rewards Points per $1, PayRewards Plus at 2 PayRewards Points per $1 (1.8% ex GST), Amex card fee 2.1% on the Free plan. Transferred at 2:1: Membership Rewards to Qantas Frequent Flyer (available with the Amex Platinum Business Card) and PayRewards Points to Qantas Business Rewards, so the points land in two accounts. After-tax fees assume a 25% company tax rate. Your card issuer sets your card’s earn rate. *Indicative estimated value of airline points is calculated at 3.5 cents per airline point – this is our estimate of redemption value based on international business class flight redemption. You may not get this value as redemption value rates vary (depending on airline and flights route/class) and any airline point redemption is subject to availability.

Dip one

Card points on bills that never took cards.

Most suppliers and landlords do not take cards, so those payments earn you nothing, and paying the ATO directly earns reduced card points. Through pay.com.au most cards earn their usual rate on all of them, and your payees still get a normal bank transfer. Your card issuer sets the rate.

Double dipping FAQs

What it is, what it costs and what it earns.

Double dipping means earning two sets of points on one business payment: your credit card points plus PayRewards Points from pay.com.au. When you pay a business bill through pay.com.au by credit card, your card earns its points as normal (dip one). With PayRewards switched on, you also earn PayRewards Points on the same dollars (dip two). pay.com.au pays your payee by bank transfer, so it works even when they do not take cards.
Not on these numbers. On a $10,000 invoice paid by Amex Platinum Business with PayRewards Plus, the fees are $394 (ex GST): $180 for PayRewards and $214 card fee on the Free plan. That is about $296 after a typical tax deduction. The same invoice earns 22,500 Membership Rewards Points plus 20,000 PayRewards Points. Transferred at 2:1, that is 21,250 airline points. That is an indicative $744 at 3.5 cents per airline point, about 2.5 times the after-tax fee. Actual value depends on the airline, route and class, and award seats are subject to availability. Gift cards return less per point, so run your own numbers.
Most Amex, Visa and Mastercard cards do, but your card issuer sets the rate, and some cards earn reduced points or none on payments like these. Check your card’s terms. PayRewards Points are earned on every eligible payment, whichever card you use.
Yes, on business rent. Pay your landlord through pay.com.au by credit card and most cards earn points as normal, but your card issuer sets the rate. PayRewards Points transfer to Qantas Business Rewards at 2:1. Your landlord receives a normal bank transfer.
No. A bank transfer earns PayRewards Points only, because there is no card in the payment. That is one dip. To double dip, pay by card.
No, you choose it. You pick a PayRewards package when you make each payment, and it carries a per-transaction fee: Core earns 1 point per $1 at 1.0% (ex GST), Plus earns 2 points per $1 at 1.8% (ex GST) and Ultra earns 3 points per $1 at 2.7% (ex GST). Ultra is available on the Regular and Premium plans. Fees are typically tax deductible for businesses. See pricing for the card fee on each plan.
Some customers go one step further and pay their credit card bill by bank transfer through pay.com.au, which earns PayRewards Points on that payment too. Check that your card issuer accepts payments this way before you rely on it.
PayID payments arrive the same day when made before 2pm AET (your first PayID payment can take longer). Card payments arrive the next business day. Standard bank transfers take two business days. You see the delivery date before you confirm every payment.
Transfer them to 17 airline and hotel partners, including Qantas Business Rewards and Virgin Australia Business Flyer at 2:1, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at 2.5:1, Emirates Skywards, Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors. The full list is on the partners page. Or redeem for digital gift cards, or use them to pay a business invoice. PayTravel and PayConcierge can help you book reward seats and events. Flights typically return the most value per point.
PayRewards Points expire after 18 months with no earning activity. Make a payment with PayRewards in that time and they stay put. The PayRewards terms have the full detail.
pay.com.au Limited holds an Australian Financial Services Licence (AFSL 700223) issued by ASIC. pay.com.au is ISO 27001 certified and PCI DSS compliant. Card and bank data are tokenised.
